Video feedback
Just looked in. Did yesterday evening, too.
You are to be congratulated for doing this.
I'm not qualified to comment on
technological aspects, but I thought it worked
reasonably well for spectating - with some
obvious drawbacks that would need improving.
No game score, so difficult to follow at
times. Glare. Sprawling players blocking
the view of the board. Fidgeting - actually
a plus as we get some live insight into how
the players are thinking.
But, it's a first try. Well done.
[Response]
Thanks for the feedback. This was a late idea
so we didn't have much time to trial and
refine, but decided to give it a go anyway and
see how it turned out. Once all the comments
are in we'll have a look at how we might adopt
some of the suggestions and how we might deal
with some of the weak points. Plenty of time
for testing ideas now.
*****************
Well done to your live feed.
Just a few feedback points.
* If you switch on after the game has
finished, you do not know the result. How
about putting the kings in the centre to
indicate the result? For a
white win, the white king goes on e4, black
win black king on e5. Draw, both kings in the
centre. But what is becoming more common
because of sensory boards, white win, kings on
both white centre squares, black win, both
kings on black centre squares, draw, 1 black
square, 1 white square.
* On one game I watched, the player
moved his name tag out of the view of the
camera to put his score sheet there, so not
easy to figure out who he was. Perhaps you may
need to put the name tag on the other other
side of the player, or edit the web page to
display their names.
* It is not always easy to pick out the
pieces. So here is a suggestion, though it is
not very practicable Get a volunteer (they
need not be at the venue) to record the moves.
They edit the moves onto a pgn file and upload
them to the internet frequently. Players can
download it and view it via a pgn viewer.
Perhaps viewing both the 2D version and live
game. You also get to view the earlier part of
the game is you switch on later.
Are you using the internet at the venue?
[Response] Result - might it be simpler to place a
card on the board stating the result?
Names - perhaps placing the name cards a bit
further away? We had intended to put the names
on our own website page with the embedded
video but it seems that, when starting the
stream we were redirected to the Livestream
page. Certainly something to look at.
Moves - I'm hoping for a better solution. I
heard that Chess Suppliers are considering
buying a sensory board to hire to events. If
these plans fall through we'll try something
else, though getting volunteers might be
problematic, though that's not to dismiss your
suggestion.
Internet - yes, we used the venue's WiFi.
*****************
I missed round one due to work but am
watching the live stream now and I must say,
it is brilliant, very well done. On a personal
note, I would love to see the results at the
end of a day but I realise you all have your
hands full.
Thank you again, this is really enjoyable.
*****************
The Dundee website asks for live game coverage
feedback - i just wanted to say that I've been
enjoying watching the stream, and thank you
for making the efforts that have made it
possible.
My only comment for improvement would be to
suggest that the camera could be angled up
slightly so that the top of the clock can be
seen - then someone joining the feed will know
immediately whose move it is.
PS. What's the best way for me to make a
gift-aided donation to MacMillan via the
congress, in appreciation of the live feed,
... Should I just make a donation to them
directly via
http://www.macmillan.org.uk/Donate/Donate.aspx
then let you know?
[Response]
I became aware that the time was next to
impossible to make out. It might be the clocks
themselves - we used new DGT clocks in the
Open and older, but larger, Saiteks elsewhere.
Perhaps they might have been easier to see. It
is certainly something to work on. The clock
had a large rocker on the top so would
indicate the move, but I don't know if that
was any easier to see. Our reception inside
the venue wasn't good, so I gave up in the end
*****************
what an excellent addition to the tourney to
have it broadcast live from top board,
brilliant bit of thinking that, and i hope it
can be expanded to cover top 4 in future,
fingers crossed...... with plenty of notice it
can gather alot more viewers

Only watched last 10-15 minutes but my main
comment would be the squares b2 & c2 were
totally blurred.
Squares b3 & c3 were partially blurred.
I could make out that white Q was in there,
but it was slightly vague.
It was like there was some reflection but
presume you’ll get other comments.
I was watching it via Firefox on a high
resolution
It is great to see
innovations like this. Personally, I would
think that having boards broadcast live would
be more interesting than video streaming but
having either is definitey to be commended in
my opinion.
One thing in favour of the video thing is that
in Dundee there is a 3-and-a-half hour playing
time so you get more time scrambles than in
your standard 4 hour game event which is
always high on entertainment value.
General feedback
Today i attended the Dundee Congress as a
spectator and i just wanted to say a big
thanks, the atmosphere was excellent,really
top class, the results were up to date, the
draws were quickly worked out etc etc, it is a
great credit to ... you, (and to others who
help to create the excellent tourny) i met
with lots of chess friends today from
different parts of scotland who said the same,
that this (the DUNDEE tourny) is by far the
best, everyone was in excellent spirits I
could not play this year but enjoyed my visit
alot. keep up the good work.
WELL DONE FELLAS

This letter comes to you with great
appreciation for all the efforts from you and
your team for making this project a big
success. I would like to thank all for
spending valuable times and efforts in
completing this project.
*****************
I'd like to congratulate you on the excellent
organisation of the Dundee & Angus Congress.
*****************
I always found Dundee to be one of the best
run and most pleasant tournaments in the
calendar.
*****************
I played in the last Congress and I was very
impressed by the whole set up and it could not
have went much better.
The Dundee Congress in my opinion is setting
the standards for the others to follow.
After the Prize giving on the way home one of
the passengers in our car .... got a text
message to say that he had just been
seen being awarded with a prize at the
Prize-giving. The person in question came
from Aberdeen and *** was very surprised as
he was not aware the Prize-giving was being
shown on the internet. ...
You should consider the top event being FIDE
rated, which at the Edinburgh Congress was a
great success with 60 players entering, an
amazing turn out and potentially appealling
for a sponsor. The take up was mainly from
top juniors and above average club players
wishing to obtain or improve their FIDE rating
and players from Europe.
*****************
Good luck with this year’s congress. I always
found Dundee to be one of the best run and
most pleasant tournaments in the calendar.
...
...
I wish the congress every success and
congratulate you on your very had work to make
it so.
*****************
Dundee
...not suprisingly it is a very popular event
despite location outside of Central Belt and
so a longer commute for mostteh majority.
If you have not played Dundee - I recommend
you give it a try
